YAH Tap Classes defined

Beginner's Class - 2-3 pm Mondays - Senior Center
and 7-8 pm Sunday evenings - the BAAY (State & Maple)

Getting the 5 elements and 5 elemental steps really mastered and up to speed, with time for individual attention.
Overcoming basic beginner problems like "paralyzed toe" (learning to flex and use the ball of the foot as your percussion instrument and "getting the rhythm of very basic combinations of the five elemental steps" and lots of repetition.

Basics - 3:30-4:30 Wednesdays - (Ongoing) See Basics Practice Sheet for the tap step vocabulary you will learn.

Note: New students at the Senior Center: Unless you have had tap lessons before, come to the Beginners classes to get a good start. I go slower in this class. It's good also for anyone wanting to brush up on the basics, or just practice.

More Info on Tap Classes

Hate to exercise, but love to dance? Lighten up!
Get fit and have fun with us.

  • Think you are uncoordinated? Think again. You may find yourself releasing years of delusion about your ability to learn to dance, when you find yourself quickly dancing along,
  • Unwinding from mental and physical stress,
  • Getting those synapses working.
  • Allowing your mind and body to naturally organize themselves,
  • This is good for your memory and good for your well being
  • It awakens your Inner Muse

Please get tap shoes as soon as you can. You will be making music. Your body is your instrument and your tap shoes are an extension, a percussion instrument. If you can hear a vibrant sound coming from good tap shoes, it will be easier for you to learn and easier for me to teach you the steps and you will enjoy it more. More about where to purchase tap shoes

Guiding Principles for my classes:
1. Practice catching and cleaning up any self-criticizing thoughts. This is the most productive habit of all. See mistakes as the opportunities to learn that they are!
2. Learn the rhythms of the tap steps, they are little tunes. That way you don't have to figure them out and they are easier to learn and remember.
3. Practice new steps - by reviewing them a few times right away. Ask to go over them again as many times as it takes to get them right, when you first learn them. (Repeating a half-learned step makes it harder to correct.)
4. If you get off, get right back on as quickly as possible!
5. Be a trooper! Be flexible and resourceful in doing whatever it takes for the success of the dance. And be supportive of all your classmates. You're a team.
6. Chat only before, after and at breaks, but not during class.
7. Give me your feedback. Let me know what you're experiencing so I can be responsive to you.
8. Keep in good physical condition (whatever it takes)
.
9. Be responsible about coming on time, coming regularly, paying on time.
10. Please let me know if you are going on vacation or are ill, etc.
11.Register for the class so I have all your info and let me know if it changes.

Thank you!
